I live in Utah as an ex-mormon atheist. I am surrounded. Mormons have a very narrow world view and Mormonism is all they talk about. All day every day. They seem nice and pleasant on the surface but if you aren't one of them forget it. I have had next door neighbors slam the door in my child's face. I am openly atheist to family and friends. I also tell anyone who asks. But at work I don't talk about it (unless that person already knows). I work for a surgery center. Doctors are already on the top of the heirarchy and they are predominantly Mormon. If I offended one I would probably lose my job. Mormons know that people become atheists. They just think the reasons for that have to do with the devil, or losing the "spirit" because of some wrong doing etc. They 'know" their church is true (as they repeat to themselves and others every chance they get) and is the only way to heaven.
